Why 1/100 oz gold premiums are high
Much of the cost of making, packing, shipping and selling a piece does not shrink with its gold content. On a $38.76 piece of gold, those fixed costs are a big share of the price. Scottsdale Mint's own product page listed its 1/100 oz bar at “as low as $15.99 over spot” when we checked on Oct 27, 2026 (Scottsdale Mint), which is about 41% of the melt value above.
Our own tracked prices show the size effect. The cheapest 1/10 oz Gold Eagle is $438.51 at Bullion Standard, 13.1% over its gold value; the cheapest 1 oz Gold Eagle is $3,957.89 at Monument Metals, 2.1% over (checked by Oct 31, 2026 2:24 AM ET). Ten 1/10 oz coins cost $427.21 more than one 1 oz coin. Going down to 1/100 oz stretches the same effect further. Prices: 1/10 oz Gold Eagle, 1 oz Gold Eagle.
Smallest government gold bullion coins
