Melt is what the pure gold in an item is worth at spot. A buyer has to test it, pay a refiner, cover the refiner's loss and fees, and make a profit, so every offer comes in under melt. How far under varies a lot by buyer, and we have no source we trust for a typical payout percentage, so we do not quote one. Instead, get two or three written offers, divide each by the melt value above, and compare the percentages.
