The Cheapest Way to Buy Gold Coins Online

  1. Compare the total, not the headline price. Add shipping and any minimum-order rules to each dealer's price before deciding.
  2. Pay by check, wire or ACH if you're comfortable. Dealers publish separate, higher prices for card/PayPal. APMEX's own pricing table notes that its check/wire column includes a cash discount (APMEX product page volume-pricing table (check/wire vs. card/PayPal)).
  3. Choose "random year" or "brand our choice" products. Dealers pick the year/brand from inventory, which usually carries a lower premium than a specific current-year coin.
  4. Prefer 1 oz over fractional sizes. Per ounce, small coins cost more. See 1/10 oz Gold Eagle.
  5. Consider bars or other sovereign coins. 1 oz gold bars, Krugerrands and Britannias are often priced below Eagles and Buffalos.
  6. Check prices on the day you buy. Premiums move. Our tables refresh automatically and are sorted lowest first.

Regulators also publish checklists of questions to ask a metals dealer before buying (CFTC – 10 Things to Ask Before Buying Physical Gold, Silver, or Other Metals).

Does paying by credit card cost more?

Yes at the dealers we track: their pages list separate, higher card/PayPal prices.
